“I found myself stepping outside my box a lot, and out of my comfort zone.”
Nicole is a social media executive of a creative agency. She is here to share her thoughts and experience living abroad. (Head to the Gallery to meet her!)
Alison: Hi, Nicole! Please introduce yourself.
Nicole: Hi there! I’m Nicole, I’m currently working as a social media executive in a creative agency where I handle their social media platform. I’ve lived overseas for a couple of years, and have recently moved back home to live with my parents. I’ve been trying to start a blog (and hopefully it’ll go through) to at least create some content on the side apart from my full-time job.
Alison: Well, I really hope you go through with the blog! So, I have a few questions for you today. Let’s start with your experience of living abroad. Did you like it?
Nicole: Personally for me, I enjoyed myself abroad as I got the freedom that I longed for when I was living at home. I found myself stepping outside my box a lot, and out of my comfort zone. It definitely helped that I was living in a dorm and so it was easier to make friends and have people that I can turn to whenever I needed help. More often than not – I found myself focusing a lot on my financials because I had to learn how to budget and Australia is not a cheap city. It’s really important to get a good base, and just a couple of good friends who you can look for in times of need. My best friend is actually Australian! And it did help me tremendously that half my family migrated there.
One more thing was having to do long distance with my boyfriend. We met in Singapore through a friend after my first semester and I was back for a holiday. It was tough trying to balance a relationship and all the insecurities that come along from a ~long distance~ but I’m thankful we pulled through.
Alison: I’m glad to hear that. Living in a foreign country can be tough but having the right support makes everything better.
If you had to make an unchangeable decision, would you choose to live abroad or stay in your hometown?
Nicole: I think that I would love to stay abroad, I love travelling and living abroad has taught me so much that perhaps living in Singapore may not have. I’ve seen myself grow so much just being in another country and if given the chance, I’d take it.
Alison: I hope you get that chance. Thank you for sharing with us!
